Moira Daniells, Health from the Inside Out, February 17, 2015

Cardinal Points would like to welcome Moira Daniells, Healthy Nutrition and Lifestyle Educator, to our show. Moira shares how she left corporate America because the philosophy in that world was not in alignment with hers. It was about competition and not collaboration. Moira grew up in a large Italian family and was raised on a Mediterranean diet which is mostly plant based. She found herself veering away from that diet until her brother Kevin died from a massive cerebral aneurysm. This was a catalyst to return to her roots and a healthier way of eating.  “I took white flour, white bread, white pasta, white sugar out of my house.” “I now know that my dinner is my destiny not my DNA, my DNA is not my destiny.” Moira now jokingly gives us her family nutrition oath. “I do solemnly swear to not beat myself up or feel like a bad person over the information I’m going to hear today. I promise not to freak out my family or cause a mutiny in my household by dumping everything out in my cabinets in one day into the garbage. What I will do instead is to educate myself about good nutrition and make incremental changes for me and my family.” Moira then relays a encouraging story when she had an opportunity to educate at risk teenage girls about nutrition. She believes the time she spent with these young girls changed their lives. “We talked about the power of food.” Moira then educates us about phytonutrients. Phyto means from the plant. “Weeds and seeds and greens and beans and fruits and roots.” Moira claims we should be eating between 30-50 grams of fiber a day. The average American eats about 5 grams. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes and beans are the best source of fiber. “We want to eat raw food as much as possible because they contain important enzymes.” Fiber helps us with eliminating toxins and wastes through our digestive system. Moira informs us about the benefits of Omega 3 fats “for our heart health standpoint, for our mental health standpoint.” Moira discovered  hemp seeds about 5-7 years ago that are high in protein and Omega 3 fat and is plant based. Our discussion then turns to unsaturated fats, mono and poly unsaturated fats. Your diet should include both and “they are nuts and seeds.” “We absolutely have to have fats in our diets.” Moira highly suggests that we stay away from hydrogenated oils. “1 gram of hydrogenated oil a day increases your risk of heart disease by 20%.” Moira then shares a disturbing fact that if our children continue their eating trends “this generation of children will be the first generation to have a shorter life expectancy than their parents.” She then states that teenagers in the US consume approximately 5 pounds of white sugar a day. Some alternatives to sugar are: stevia (liquid is a better choice), coconut sugar, Xylitol (from birch), raw honey and real maple syrup. Moira highly recommends that we stay away from synthetic sweeteners.

We then shift gears and discuss how positive thoughts, having gratitude and appreciation supports good health. “Our cells are always eaves dropping on our thoughts.”  Moira says “I thank my body all of the time for working at it’s highest level.” “I like being mission driven. Being part of a bigger purpose.” People are “the architect of their lives.” It’s important to have goals but even more extraordinary is “enjoying the journey and appreciating everything you have.” Moira is a big believer in using dream boards to help create the life that you desire. “I want to be a dream catcher. I want to be an ambassador of hope.” The entrepreneurial vehicle Moira has chosen to help others achieve better health and more wealth is the Juice Plus company.
